The Book of Signs is structured as follows:

• I. The Prologue and Calling of the First Disciples (1:1-51)
• II. From Cana to Cana: The Cana Cycle (2:1-4:54)
• III. From Jerusalem to Bethany: The Festival Cycle (5:1-10:42)
• IV. Introducing the Passion (11:1-12:50)

John 1–12 is commonly called the Book of Signs, as it records the miracles through which Jesus reveals His identity and divine authority. Turning water into wine, healing the sick, feeding the five thousand, giving sight to the blind, and raising Lazarus all display His divine power and glory. These signs divide people; some respond in faith, while others grow hardened in unbelief. John states his purpose clearly: “These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (20:31).
